Overlea is post-war brick colonial country — solid, compact homes on modest lots, built when Baltimore County was growing fast. The gutters on these houses are workhorses: simple rooflines, straightforward runs, nothing fancy. But the tight lots create a drainage puzzle that the original builders did not always solve: when houses sit close together, every downspout discharge lands near someone's foundation — yours or the neighbor's.
We spend a lot of time in Overlea just thinking about where water goes after it leaves the downspout. The fix is usually extensions — getting the discharge four to six feet out, past the foundation backfill, and aimed so it does not become the next-door problem. It is unglamorous work and it solves an outsized share of damp-basement complaints. Our basement drainage guide explains why this matters so much in Baltimore's clay soil.
The gutters themselves are typically 5-inch aluminum of varying ages — some original, some replaced in the 90s, some brand new. Repairs and cleanings keep most of them going for years. Tree cover is light to moderate, so guards are a per-house call — the streets with mature maples fill fast in fall, the newer-planted streets barely do.
